Tools needed: Flathead and Philips head screwdrivers, pliers, and a replacement 285748 Whirlpool Agitator Cam Kit.
Step 1: Unplug the washer from the wall. Make sure it is completely disconnected from power.
Step 2: Turn off the water supply to the washer. You will need to locate the shut-off valve and turn it off before continuing.
Step 3: Remove the agitator cap. This is typically located on top of the agitator or in the center of the agitator. Gently use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the cap.
Step 4: Remove the screws that are securing the agitator to the outer tub. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws and then set them aside.
Step 5: Slide the agitator off of the outer tub. Be careful not to damage the rubber seal.
Step 6: Locate the cam assembly, which is usually located near the bottom of the agitator.
Step 7: Use a pair of pliers to loosen and remove the retaining clip that holds the cam assembly.
Step 8: Disconnect the wiring from the cam assembly and then remove the old assembly.
Step 9: Install the new 285748 Whirlpool Agitator Cam Kit using the same technique used to remove the old cam assembly.
Step 10: Reconnect the wiring to the new assembly.
Step 11: Secure the cam assembly with the retaining clip and tighten with a pair of pliers.
Step 12: Slide the agitator back on to the outer tub and secure with the screws removed earlier.
Step 13: Finally, replace the agitator cap and make sure it is securely in place.
Step 14: Once all the steps are complete, plug the washer back into the wall and turn on the water supply. You should now have a properly functioning agitator.
